New Year 2020 – Ski Update

A very happy New Year to all our past, present and future friends and guests of Chamonix Exclusive. We hope 2020 is a prosperous, and happy year for one and all.

Snow conditions have been very good over the Christmas and New Year, particularly mid-station and above. With the heavy snowfall over the Christmas ski holidays, some excellent powder has been enjoyed by festive skiers both on and off the piste as a consequence, with the New Year ski holidays enjoying bright sunshine too.

With evening and nighttime temperatures falling well below freezing, snow-making has improved the depths of many of the lower slopes and in particular the condition of the runs to resort with all lower runs generally now in good condition.

The week ahead looks sent to continue the current sunny theme with freezing temperatures overnight, cold starts therefore first thing, but warmer temperatures midday through to mid-afternoon. No further snow is currently expected in the immediate term.

WHERE'S GOOD TO SKI AND SNOWBOARD CURRENTLY

Les Houches

The top of Les Houches has provided great ski and snowboard conditions, particularly for beginner and intermediate skiers. Whilst the warm afternoon conditions will see some deterioration, with ice patches on sunny pistes below the mis-station lifts, the large snowfall and aspect of the slopes has meant that most ski and snowboard runs still continue to remain in excellent condition. With its stunning views, blue skies, and generally good blue and red runs, we highly recommended Les Houches for nervous and early intermediate skiers over the coming days.

Brevent and Flegere

Brevent and Flegere have been excellent all week with great conditions on the pistes and also between the pistes for competent off-piste skiers. Snow depths are good and will, we are sure, continue to provide great skiing and snowboarding, particularly in the morning on freshly groomed runs. The predominantly south facing slopes does however mean that some of the off-piste skiing is becoming a little hard packed and cruddy so better for on-piste skiing and snowboarding unless backpacking high-altitude with a suitably qualified guide or competent mountaineer.

Grands Montets - Argentiere

The predominantly North facing slopes of the Grands Montets have ensured conditions for skiers and snowboarders has been excellent throughout Christmas and the New Year ski holidays and on the piste the snow remains in good condition. Intermediates we are sure will therefore enjoy the challenging blues and reds as a consequence although the run home has some ice patches (but generally well covered with artificial snow). Between the slopes competent off-piste skiers and snowboarders will have found the off-piste to be equally as good. The Lavancher side of the Grands Montets in particular still has excellent snow with the Chamois black slope is in good condition overall too and under the Herse the black runs are in very good condition.

La Tour (Balme)

La Tour (Balme) has had an excellent week snow wise. On piste conditions were superb at the beginning of the week. They still remain in good condition although some runs have are now hard-packed in the morning. This said, the pisteurs have done a great job grooming the slopes and as consequence Le Tour has been an ideal playground for early intermediates with beautifully manicured, corduroy pistes to start off on. Competent off-piste skiers will have particularly enjoyed the tree line skiing down the Vallorcine side over the festive Christmas and New Year ski holidays although most powder has now been skied out. This said, the bumps are good fun and still good too! Despite being New Year, slopes have been relatively quiet too which has helped on and off the piste.
