Skiing Chamonix January

January is sometimes overlooked by ski holiday guests and we think this is a real shame. In our view there are so many great reasons to choose January. So here is why we think it makes perfect sense to go early in the season (and if you agree, don’t leave it too late to book – January is often our first month to sell out – long in advance).

Quite simply, January 2020 has once again been a fantastic ski and snowboard month. Great snow conditions, crisp powdery pistes, blues skies, and uncrowded slopes. Not only this, those staying at Chalet No.5 during the middle two weeks will have also enjoyed some incredible prices too, at one of the very best ski in ski out Chamonix chalets!

What Is it Like?

Snow conditions we find are typically very good. The slightly colder temperatures keeps the piste in tip top condition and with slopes less crowded are less likely to be ‘skied out’ as they can be with heavy volume later in the season.

Some of you may have noted the ‘slightly colder temperatures’ reference above and whilst it is typically colder, we are talking a couple of degrees in most cases as most weather sites show. This said, if a suntan is the most important aspect of your ski or snowboard holiday then March is likely to be the better month.

Any Other Benefits?

Setting aside the fact that we love the crisper snow conditions and uncrowded pistes, the other significant benefit is the costs are lower than February and early March. Savings vary but expect to cut the cost of a self-catered week by around a third on average. On top of this, some weeks in January also benefit from reduced lift pass prices, we can update you on this when booking.

What Is The Apres-Ski Like?

Chamonix benefits over most other ski resorts by virtue of the fact that it has a large year round population so there is something going on – all year round.

January can however be quieter in the weeks, but weekends are not!  Let’s clarify quieter too as this is relative to the party weeks at the height of season. No it isn’t quite so ‘lively’, but bars such as the Terrace Bar, Chambre Neuf, Elevation, Moo Bar, the Jekyll are always packed once the slopes close with live music and dancing on the tables in some bars, all well into the night.
