Ski in ski out is a term widely used for chalets and hotels that are situated close, or next to a ski slope. It can get a little hazy as some will claim the title, but can be found someway away from the slopes (off-piste skiing or having to ski back through the village for example). This said, most reputable companies would only use ski in ski out to refer to their chalets that are no more than a stones throw away (typically less than 100m) from a green, blue, red or black slope that is linked to the main ski areas.
In the case of Chalet No.5, the ski in ski out Chamonix valley claim is indisputable as the property backs on to the blue Ailloud piste. In fact, Chalet No.5 gets its name from the blue Aillouds piste sign that sits on the edge of the chalet's garden and bares the number 5 on it (see photo above). Where you can then go through the tunnel and left to the Prarion Gondola, or right to the Bellevue Cable Car (both blue runs).
Most importantly, it means that you don't have to carry your skis or snowboard anywhere, sit or stand on cramped buses, instead, just start the day from the very moment you leave the chalet. Saving lots of time at the front and backend of the day, as well as saving a great deal of discomfort walking in awkward boots not designed for snowy and / or icy paths.
Being situated on the blue Aillouds piste, most competent early intermediate skiers or snowboarders can click on their skies or snowboard and just ski or board straight down to either of the two main lifts.
Certainly in terms of family ski holidays, and having had children ourselves, we understand the demands of children just in terms of checking and then in some cases carrying their equipment to the slopes. But here at Chalet No. 5, one of the most popular ski in ski out Chamonix chalets, such inconvenience is not part of the skiing and snowboarding experience. The large Ski Room allows for all abilities and family ski members to get ready to go (and by go we mean straight on to the slopes and not getting hot and bothered being transported or walking (and carrying) long distances), goggles, helmets, gloves, etc. are on, skis and poles don't need to be checked in or carried, just put them on. A Hassle free start to the day!
