(19/09/2011)
It's Snowing

Well it may only be September but this weekends cold front has certainly put a chill on the temperatures here in the Chamonix Valley with snow falling this morning as low as 1,600m before rising to 1,900m. High up on the Mont Blanc with local Guides from Mont Blanc Guides reporting as much as 70cm of fresh snow making the route for late season climbers difficult. Snow is expected to continue for most of the day before slowing and stopping around tea time. Tomorrow is expected to be brighter and warmer with temperatures returining to double figures and sunshine for most of the day.

Mont Blanc Guides above the Tete Rousse
(15/09/2011)
Race Is On Once Again To Clear Water Under Tete Rousse Glacier

The rush is once again to drain the 'lake' of water that is once again trapped and building underneath the Glacier de Tête Rousse. Le Dauphine reports that the latest findings of scientists from the CNRS this month indicate that the summer has once again filled the bowl. Engineers and scientists are now actively working to identify the fill rate and also find a natural and sustainable drainage.  Scientists reveal that the warm days in August saw a rapid acceleration in the amount of water that fomed.

In 1892 this natural event resulted in 175 deaths in the village of St Gervais as the ice gave way, sending 80,000 cubic metres of water cascading to St Gervais. It is therefore a very serious issue and Mayor Jean-Marc Peillex of St Gervais advised reporters that: "We know that the water rises, as it is now only 12m from the surface of the ice,". Philippe Derumigny, the prefect of the Haute-Savoie, and Jean-Marc Peillex announced that the cost of the operation to drain the water would cost €545 000.

Last year work had to be stopped on the 8th October and with winter once again fast approaching, it really is a race against time. Some good news however is that the movement of subsidence of the ice above the pocket has at least stopped.

Chamonix Helicopter Crash Kills Four
(14/09/2011)
Four Die In Chamonix Helicopter Crash

At around 10am this morning tragedy struck when a Mont Blanc Helicopter struck an EDF cable, catching fire before plummeting to the ground. Two passengers were able to eject from the helicopter and two were trapped inside. All four however sadly died at the scene.

Local sources suggested that they were surveying the Emosson Dam that sits on the French / Swiss border near Vallorcine and is owned by EDF. The pilot was believed to be manouvering the helicopter to drop off two of his pilots at the maintence cable car when its rear rotary wheel caught the cable, catching fire and then plummeting to the ground.

The pilot, a local Chamonix Mountain Guide, Jacques Forque has been officially named, a son of a Director of Mont Blanc Helicopteres, Jean-Marc Mermillod, head of security at the dam Emosson and Desmus Regis.

Time To Reflect Remember Here In Chamonix The 9/11 Massacre
(11/09/2011)
10 Years On We Remember 9/11

It is a day that few of us old enough to remember will forget, 9th September 2001. All adults will certainly know where they were the day when the news broke of the worlds worst ever terrorist attack. It changed the world, not just in terms of how we travel, but how we see and view it today.

At Chamonix Exclusive our thoughts are most importantly not only with the near 3,000 people that lost their lives that day from a diverse range of faiths and beliefs, but also the sixteen hundred people that lost their partner, the three thousand children who lost a parent and the many thousands of other family members and friends, who lost someone they loved.
