French half-Term ski holidays for us this February were another chance to pop over to Chalet No.5 for some fun. Whilst Chamonix for some might not be their 'go to' family ski holidays destination, based on the myths it is a ski resort for experts only, this is wholly unfounded. As our family ski holidays Chamonix video below demonstrates, Chamonix is far more than just an adrenalin junkies paradise. Yes the skiing up and down the Chamonix Valley is some of the best and can be some of the most challenging in the world for competent skiers on and off the piste, it also how so much for everyone else too.
Intermediates have a variety of runs that they can choose from. La Tour offers some great, confidence boosting pistes for all ages, and the runs under the Autannes chair lift are particularly flattering, and the run down to the Les Esserts is a favourite with the children and parents, competent and early intermediates alike. Elsewhere Les Houches is another great, family favourite (our children can never get enough of it) with its wide pistes, the Col de Voza great for all ages to practise their carving. But the standout favourite always seems to be the Fontaines red or the Cha / Abbaye Blue down to the Crozat chair. The red ideal for competent intermediates and the blue good for most early intermediates.
Beginners are more than catered for with Les Houches the stand out area with a fabulous nursery slopes, a large and very safe area that includes a slow moving chair and travelator at the top, with easy blues close by to allow children (and adults) the chance to quickly move on to the slopes that surround this pretty ski area with its particularly stunning scenery.
La Tour is again another great area for beginner skiers with a fabulous nursery area at the bottom of the Charamillion Gondola,. There is also a good nursery area at the top of the Flegere ski area and in the centre of Chamonix both at Les Planards and Les Chosalets.
But for us, what really marks Chamonix as a must visit family ski holidays destination is that it offers so much more than just fabulous skiing and snowboarding for all ages and abilities. Off the slopes there is the fabulous luge that winds down a fast and furious 1.3km of track (children and adults our case love it - height restrictions apply), a fabulous ice rink, full sized swimming pool, horse drawn carriage rides, husky sleigh rides and much, much more and we never therefore here the phrase 'we are bored' when we are there.
Even if as parents you prefer to leave such to the children, with a vast array of shops for all tastes, great bars and fabulous savoyard restaurants, fast food burger and pizza restaurants too, there is plenty off the slopes to do (credit cards come in handy if holidaying with shopaholics - or maybe not depending on your persuasion). And don't forget, a family ski holiday at Chamonix Exclusive and Chalet No.5 means that whilst the children are playing in the Games Room, or watching their favourite films in the luxury Cinema Room, you can relax in the hot tub, the sauna, or for the ultimate touch of luxury, be pampered in the Massage and Treatments Room (charges apply)! With all this on tap, we can't wait until the next one!
