Answering Some Of Your Favourite Questions You Ask About Chamonix

CHAMONIX QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Is Chamonix Open?

All Chamonix ski lifts are now open. The Les Houches, l’Aiguille du Midi, Brevent, Felegere, Grands Montets, and La Balme are all open daily as is the Mont Blanc Tramway, and the Montenvers.

Full details of the Chamonix ski lift opening dates and times can be found on our dedicated lift-station page.

Can you ski in Chamonix?

You can ski in Chamonix from the 16th November 2023 snow conditions permitting, with the Grands Montets partially opening. Other areas will follow during early December with the official opening of all Chamonix Ski Lifts on the 16th December 2023.

The closest ‘main’ ski lift to Chamonix is the Brevent Gondola. L’Aiguille du Midi cable car is also situated close to the Chamonix town centre, providing access to the world-famous Valle Blanche off-piste itinerary route. L’Aiguille du Midi also allows access to the Mont-Blanc viewing platform and Void.

Is Chamonix a luxury resort?

Chamonix is a luxury resort frequented by both the rich and the famous. One of the top six ski resorts in Europe, it is also in the summer, the number one alpine destination. An old, historic town under Mont-Blanc, Western Europe’s highest mountain, it attracts a variety of visitors consequently.

In Chamonix, you will find Michelin Star restaurants, Savoie delicatessens, fabulous patisseries, coffee shops, designer outlets, and the rich and well-heeled. Don’t be surprised to be sat next to an A-list celebrity in one of its swanky bars and or restaurants. All staying in one of the fabulous luxury chalets and or hotels in the Chamonix Valley.

The above said, being a large, famous ski and mountain resort, it has something for everyone. Mountaineering, ski and snowboard shops, fabulous burger bars, etc. In fact, we think this is one of the things that makes Chamonix so special, its eclectic mix and the stylish way it carries it.

Is Chamonix expensive?

Chamonix is reassuringly expensive, being one of Europe’s top six ski and snowboarding resorts, the home of Western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont-Blanc (4,810m), and the Alps’ most popular destination in the summer. Its rich mountain heritage provides a historic, beautiful town, surrounded by majestic peaks and some of the prettiest mountain scenery anywhere in the world. Home of the 1924 winter Olympics, there is so much activity-wise. Although Chamonix is expensive, it is reasonably priced compared to other expensive, luxury resorts, for example, Courchevel, Megeve, Lech, Zurs, San Moritz, St Anton, Zermatt and others. A large beer will set you back around €7, a good bottle of wine in a restaurant circa €50-€65, and a high-quality meal, excluding wine circa €50-65 for two or three courses.

Why is Chamonix so popular in winter?

Chamonix is popular because it is one of the top six European ski and snowboard destinations. The other five are Espace d’Killy (Val d’Isere and Tignes), the Three Valleys (Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens), St Anton, Verbier, and Zermatt. It is rated so favourably because it boasts some of the most challenging skiing and snowboarding, not only in Europe but anywhere in the world. Consequently, it is a mecca for some of the world’s top skiers and snowboarders. It also enjoys high-altitude skiing and some of the longest vertical runs in Europe.

Although famous for its extreme skiing and snowboarding, it does have something for everyone. Les Houches and La Tour are great for beginners and intermediates, and Brevent and Flegere offer challenging skiers for intermediates. The Grands Montets are the hardest of them all.

Why is Chamonix so popular in the summer?

Chamonix is one of the favourite alpine destinations in the summer because it is situated next to Mont-Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. It has attracted visitors for over 200 years. The British were some of the early explorers, but nowadays, it attracts visitors from all five continents. In the summer, Chamonix welcomes over 100,000 visitors per day. They are attracted to the resort to see and or climb Mont-Blanc and sample the fabulous scenery and beautiful old town.

Although Chamonix is great in wintertime, many who live here will often tell you that summer is their favourite season. You can walk, cycle, mountain bike, eat out, dine-in, walk, climb, play tennis, swim, sunbathe, you name it. And with temperatures regularly between 25 and 35 degrees centigrade, it has a great climate. And no one will ever tire of its stunning vista. It is one of the most spectacular you will ever find.

Is Chamonix ski in ski out?

There are only a limited number of ski chalets and hotels that are ski in ski out in the Chamonix Valley. Chamonix is therefore not generally considered a ski in ski out resort. Most chalets and apartments are situated away from the slopes. Unless you book a ski in ski out chalet, you will need to walk, drive, get a bus, or taxi to the slopes.

Luxury Chalet No.5 is a rare ski in ski out chalets in the Chamonix Valley. True ski in ski out chalets and apartments are widely regarded as properties located right next to the piste or a ski lift in the main ski areas. Some properties claim to be ski in ski out, but this can mean accessing the slopes ‘off-piste’, which is not the case if you stay at Chamonix’s luxury Chalet No.5, where the back garden connects to the blue Ailloud piste. From here, you can ski down to the ESF Ski School and Prarion Gondola.

Is Chamonix a high altitude ski resort?

Chamonix is a high altitude ski resort with the highest lift station, l’Aiguille du Midi, at the height of 3,842m. It is the second-highest lift station in Europe. You can ski and snowboard the world-famous Vallee Blanche, an off-piste, glacier itinerary route from the top with a qualified IFMGA Mountain Guide. Please note, no piste skiing is available from this lift. Chamonix town itself is situated at an altitude of 1,035m.

The Grands Montets lift station is 3,250m, and this usually provides access to a great black run. However, a fire in 2018 caused extensive damage to the Grands Montets lift station, and the lift to the top of the Grands Montets is currently closed (the ski area is open, however). A replacement lift is estimated to be rebuilt for the 2023/24 ski season. The date is tentative as delays have beset the rebuilding project due to ongoing negotiations between the lift operating company and an insurer.

The Bochard Gondola is the next highest ski lift in the Chamonix Valley at 2,767m.

Is Chamonix good for beginners?

Chamonix is good for beginners, providing you select the right area to learn. Les Houches is one of the most popular areas to learn to ski as it has some lovely, flattering, green and blue pistes to build confidence skiing and snowboard on. La Tour is also good, with an excellent beginner area at the bottom of the La Balm / La Tour lift station. Planards in Chamonix is good to learn to ski but limited once you want to progress. Le Savoy is good, conditions permitting, before moving to the higher Brevent slopes, although the leap between the two can be a challenging step up for some.

The Grands Montets would not be our first choice for beginners learning to ski and or wanting to progress. In our opinion, the blues here are more like reds. The reds in some other resorts would probably be classified as blacks. Brevent and Flegere are ok but, as intimated earlier, more suited for intermediates, and hence we primarily recommend Les Houches or La Tour for beginners and early intermediates.

Is the apres-ski good in Chamonix?

The apres-ski is good in Chamonix although the long valley does mean it can be a little spaced out. In Chamonix itself, the Chambre Neuf next to the train station has live bands with revellers dancing on the tables long into the night. Slightly calmer is the Elevation Bar opposite, and the Folie Douce is often lively too and found the Brevent side of town. A bus also runs throughout the valley direct to the Folie Douce making it easy to get to wherever you finish your ski and snowboard day. In Les Houches, the Kitsch Inn has live music and a good apres-ski atmosphere most evenins, and if skiing on the Grands Montets, the Office again has live music and a great vibe as people file off the slopes.

What is the best restaurant in Chamonix?

The best restaurant for fine dining in Chamonix is Albert Premier. It is situated on the edge of Chamonix town, heading out to Argentiere. The Albert Premier is a Michelin Star restaurant frequented by the rich and famous who visit Chamonix. Diners can choose from the taster menu or the a la carte menu.

Other alternative restaurants in Chamonix that we recommend are the Cape Horn, the Caleche, the Casa Valerio, the Cabanne, l’Impossible, Granges en Haute, Munchies, and the Maison Carrier. More information on these restaurants can be found by clicking this best restaurant in Chamonix link

How many Michelin star restaurants in Chamonix?

Chamonix has just one michelin star restaurant, the Albert Premier. It has one  Michelin Star and is situated on the outskirts of the town centre, on the road heading out to Argentiere from the Place du Mont Blanc square.

This said, the summer and autumn is even better in our view with so much to do, and so little too. The latter include relaxing on the sun terraces marvelling at the views, luxurious exterior lounging enjoying  coffee, croissants, and or pre-dinner drinks, dining alfresco late at night. Whatever you choose, a Chamonix summer holiday will be especially too.

Not only one of the alps most luxurious resorts, Chamonix is also regularly referred to as the mountain capital of the world. CHAMONIX HOLIDAYS

Chamonix is a world-famous ski and mountain resort. It offers some of the most challenging skiing and snowboarding globally and is frequented by some of Europe’s best skiers and snowboarders in winter. But it is not just about extreme skiing and snowboarding; it has something for everyone. Les Houches and La Tour’s ski areas enjoy particularly flattering pistes, great for mixed ability family ski holidays. Flegere and Brevent are great for intermediates, and the Les Grands Montets offers a challenging ski and snowboard experience for even the most advanced skiers and snowboarders. Finally, for the adventurous amongst us, competent intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders, conditions permitting, may want to sample the crown jewel of the Chamonix Valley, an unforgettable off-piste trip down the Valley Blanche (qualified Mountain Guide strongly recommended).

Chamonix is also impressive off the slopes and has an excellent reputation for its apres-ski in the winter and cool hangouts in the summer, where hip visitors mix with hardcore mountaineers on the terraces and Chamonix town square. Whether spring, summer, autumn or winter, you will find busy bars, restaurants, mountaineering shops, and chic boutiques to ensure a wide variety of tastes are satisfied. Chamonix provides a genuinely unique and unforgettable experience with a truly unique atmosphere.

And if skiing, snowboarding, cycling, climbing and other traditional Chamonix sports are not enough. There is also the ice rink, swimming pool, spa centre, sports centre, sledging, luge run park ride, sleigh and husky rides, tandem paragliding, ice climbing, and so much, much more.
